CALL – LAWYER

JRS Malta is seeking to recruit a LAWYER on a one-year definite term contract to work with asylum seekers and immigrants in Malta.

This document outlines the qualifications required for the post as well as the job description.

Terms and conditions

The post is a full-time post, however applications from individuals wishing to work part-time or reduced hours will also be considered.

Qualifications

Applicants must:

→     be in possession of a degree of Doctor of Laws, or an equivalent/comparable qualification, and a warrant to practice in the local courts – individuals in the process of obtaining a warrant and relevant experience may also be considered

→     have a working knowledge of Refugee Law and Human Rights Law

→     be able to speak and write Maltese and English fluently

→     have good communications skills, and the ability to work in a team

→     be willing to work with and for people from diverse cultures

→     possess a driving license (preferably own transport)

Knowledge of other relevant languages, such as French and Arabic, will be considered an asset.

Previous experience working with immigrants and/or asylum seekers will be considered an asset.

Job description

The selected candidate will be expected to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

In addition to providing legal assistance in individual cases assigned to him/her, s/he will conduct outreach and provide information to migrants and asylum seekers in detention and in the community together with other members of the JRS Malta Team.

Individual case work includes: meeting with clients, writing letters to the competent authorities, providing assistance with case preparation, preparing legal submissions, writing appeals, attending court/board hearings, and conducting research.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to attend an interview and to undertake a number of tasks, which will include spending a number of hours in the office in order to better understand the nature of the work involved before a final decision is taken.
