Conference: Understanding the other

The JRS ConferenceOver 140 social-care, healthcare and other professionals, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and nurses, who come in contact with migrants and asylum seekers through their work, attended a conference organised by the Jesuit Refugee Service entitled 'Understanding the other - The challenge of providing culturally-competent care' on the 26th and 27th April.

The conference provided participants with increased awareness of the complex issues impacting the psychological well-being of migrants, migrants’ perception of their own situation and of that of the professionals providing a service, and the challenges facing professionals providing a service to this particular client group. Speakers were a mix of local and foreign academics and practitioners.

The conference was part of a series of events which is aimed at increasing the capacity of mainstream service providers to provide services to vulnerable asylum seekers, as part of a project to provide sheltered accommodation and psychosocial support to vulnerable asylum seekers to whom such services are not otherwise available.

The project is partly funded by ERF 2010.
