Boat carrying 600 Refugees sinks off Libya coast

Scores of refugees fleeing Libya are feared dead when their heavily overloaded boat sank shortly after departure early yesterday morning, in the vicinity of Tripoli.

Some survivors are said to have reached the shore after swimming to safety but many hundred others are missing. The boat was said to have been carrying over 600 people, like many others carrying mainly sub-Saharan African refugees that made it to the Italian island of Lampedusa the day before. JRS Malta laments this terrible loss of life as people desperately seeking to reach safety elsewhere continue to drown in the Mediterranean.
